Hello, Hsing-Yen,

I got a Malayalam tester, and made some improvements to the range.

I'm not sure if this report was ever a real bug in the font, but you might want to re-test it.

Hi,

I finally got a chance to try this in BabelPad. I do not see this behavior. See attached. (I wonder why I marked it "confirmed". Probably I was thinking of some other problem.)

I suspect one of the fonts wasn't properly installed in Windows. I have noticed that some fonts delivered with Windows 7 do not support all these character conjuncts, and behave as you described.

You might try using some print-to-PDF program for Windows to make a PDF file. Then in Acrobat under "properties" you can see which fonts are embedded in the file.

Thanks!

Hi,

I have copied seven combinations from last comment for test. In the 20150829 build, they looks proper in both FreeSerif and FreeSans when I tested in Firefox; but when I copied them in BabelPad and LibreOffice, they still looks incorrect in FreeSans. BTW I found Unicode introduced a new character in Malayalam block, which encoded in U+0D5F.

Well, I copied all ligatures from here, found only these glyphs posotioned incorrect in FreeSans: ണ്ണ, പ്പ, പ്ല, ല്ല, ന്റ, ര്ഗ, ര്ജ.

(BTW I got the new release of Rachana font from that FTP link, found all these sequnces works well except rga and rja.)

Hi, anonymous

Thanks, but what we need is a native reader, not another font.

In fact I have just written somebody who might be able to help.

The original posting stated that the problem was with the 2012 release.

Note that the 2012 releasee was tested and working with the older Linux font rendering system, Pango and with Windows XP

Since then the font rendering system common in Linux has changed to Harfbuzz, to follow changes in Windows font rendering. This was a good thing, but it broke most (or all) Indic fonts.

Again, we are in need a native speaker of Malayalam to do testing.

The Malayalam range has problems; some are known. This is one of the main blocks to a release of the font.

Development stopped on Malayalam partly because we stopped hearing from our main Malayalam collaborator.

If you are able to help, please let us know.

Well, I got a development release, I found the glyph of ല്ല looks resolved in FreeSerif, but positioned incorrect in FreeSans, then യ്യ looks normal in FreeSans and FreeSerif.

The fonts freeserif and freesans include Malayalam glyphs based on the free font "rachana" built by Rachana Akshara Vedi. But some combinations are not proper. Examples are combinations of the same character repeated, such as ല്ല and യ്യ, as seen in the screenshot. The same characters appear properly when Rachana font is used, as shown in the screenshot.
