@Pantxo: I confirmed your patch worked and converted it to a full changeset and checked it in here (http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/ade6e5ae6164).

After starting Octave with the GUI, I see the following behavior:

The toolkit shouldn't switch just because a new figure is created by number.

If the figure number is not specified, the toolkit remains "gnuplot" and the figure is opened with gnuplot.
