I fixed 3 other instances in drawnow where an error condition could leave the lock on the graphics handle in place (http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/0f1a722133f4).  Closing report.

Thanks Rik. The patch consists of a single line and was just a guess of mine so I'll accept your kind suggestion next time I make a more significant contribution.

Confirmed.  I also tested the patch and it clears up the problem.  Since you are creating several patches for Octave would you like to be recognized in the list of contributors to Octave, or would you prefer to be anonymous?

Either way is fine.  Generally for code check-ins we use FIRST_NAME LAST_NAME <email@address> so there is a way to contact someone if a patch turns out not to work.  In the Octave manual the form is just First_NAME LAST_NAME and appears in the Preface section.

The attached patch fixes it for me.

I use drawnow() in a try/catch statement when using options not supported by Octave or older MATLAB versions:

http://www.mathworks.com/help/matlab/ref/drawnow.html

try, drawnow limitrate; catch, drawnow; end

It seems that a call to drawnow() with a non valid option will freeze Octave if a figure was opened, or next time one tries to open one:

figure; drawnow XXXX
<FREEZE>

>> drawnow XXXX
error: drawnow: invalid argument, expected 'expose' as argument
>> figure
<FREEZE>

It might be due to the undocumented drawnow syntax:

-- Built-in Function:  drawnow (TERM, FILE, MONO, DEBUG_FILE)
