Well, Open Sans is also released at Github, you can download directly from here.

Hi Steve.

1) There is no such tradition or rule to capitalize every word in a name in Russian. We usually capitalize the first word only: "Полужирный курсив"

2) I'll try to explain.
The word "Полужирный" may be translated as "Semi-bold", and the word "Жирный" - as "Bold". But I usually see exactly "Полужирный" in a font name (in the font style, usually) in most apps, when it means the bold typeface. The exact representation of names and styles may be different in different apps. That's how it looks for OpenSans font family in LibreOffice:

Filename Font name Weight Style
OpenSans-Regular.ttf Open Sans 400 Обычный (Regular)
OpenSans-Italic.ttf Open Sans 400 Курсив (Italic)
OpenSans-Bold.ttf Open Sans 700 Полужирный (Bold)
OpenSans-BoldItalic.ttf Open Sans 700 Полужирный курсив (Bold Italic)

OpenSans-Semibold.ttf Open Sans Semibold 600 Обычный (Regular)
OpenSans-SemiboldItalic.ttf Open Sans Semibold 600 Курсив (Italic)

OpenSans-Light.ttf Open Sans Light 300 Обычный (Regular)
OpenSans-LightItalic.ttf Open Sans Light 300 Курсив (Italic)

There may be also the "Oblique" style, "Наклонный" in Russian. E.g. in FreeMono family.

Wiktionary also provide several translations for boldface:

https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/boldface

Hi Steve,

I refered it at Wiktionary, I was not found “Полужирный” but found “жирный” from here. Жирный is nominative or accusative (and inanimate) from, this word is masculine. I think полужирный may have similar use.

Then I found bold typeface is called “полужирный шрифт” in Russian.

Wikipedia article Cyrillic script also explained “A boldfaced type is called poluzhirniy shrift ("semi-bold type"), because there existed fully boldfaced shapes that have been out of use since the beginning of the 20th century.”

Hi Vlad!

No need to upload thw whole files, I can easily change the TTF names.

It's unclear to me how this happened. I did check with a Russian speaker. It looks like I just mixed the words up in some of the fonts (but not others).

Questions:

1) Is it best to capitalize the words, or not?

2) I'm unsure of the grammar for bold italic:
Полужирный Курсив

(In some languages, it is common to treat these as adjectives rather than as part of the name.)

Thanks!!!

Oh no. There should be one more file: FreeSerifBold.sfd. I can't attach it, the size limit is reached.

Best regards. Vlad.

Hi all. I've solved this issue by my own. The problem was in incorrect translation of TTF Names in Russian in source SFD files. I post here SFD files, that I've corrected (only replaced incorrect strings in TTF names) and generated TTF fonts.

Replaced "Обычный" to "Полужирный" (last word means "Bold") in TTF Names.

Please, consider to publish these patched fonts to all.

Hi.

The issue is actual for TTF FreeSerif (2012 release) and Windows 7 with Russian locale. FreeSerif Bold font is recognized as "Обычный" (Regular) by OS. So I can't install both Bold and Regular fonts simultaneously.

BoldItalic is recognized as "Обычный Курсив" (Regular Italic). However, both BoldItalic and Italic are installed without any problems.
