I think this is still present in the mxe-octave build of Octave 4.2.0.

The very first plot command takes quite a long time (afterwards it's fine). This might be due to fontconfig generating its font cache when first used. This cache generation might be shifted into the installation process of mxe-octave.

Retagging release from 4.0.0-rc1 to 4.0.0.

Updating the bug summary to describe the problem better. I still don't see any delay on Linux or Windows XP (no non-default fonts installed on Windows XP VM). I can only guess that this may get worse the more fonts are installed? Needs confirmation and more information to understand what causes the delay you are experiencing.

Ok, retested and it works on both XP 32 and Win8.1 64. However, the very first time I do it it loads (fonts?) for 15+ seconds on my i7 machine and 30-60s on my old core2 so I just assumed it had hung. After the first time there is no delay. Maybe the fonts should already load during installation or pop up some warning message.

Works for me also with Windows XP.

Works for me on 32-bit (released on ftp) and home-brew (MXE) 64-bit Octave on Win7 64-bit (qt toolkit):

.. and I see a box with "foo" in a textbox in the lowerleft corner.
With fltk I don't see the textbox, but Octave doesn't "hang".

What Windows version do you have?

Putting a string in uicontrol hangs the Octave process in Windows, without string it seems to work fine.
