Ah, didn't see there was a new Octave. Homebrew is not updated to the new version yet. :/

As noted in bug #42838, this is fixed in Octave 4.0.1 or later.

Has anyone solved this problem on a mac? I still get a black rectangle!
I'm using gnuplot 5.0.3 with aquaterm and octave 4.0.0.
Interestingly print does work for 3d plots (plot3()) but not for plot().
Similarly with saveas.

OK, thanks for letting me know about the regression issue. I too was confused by the black rectangle. I thought it was something having to do with "mono" in gnuplot. I'll make sure this gets fixed in gnuplot.

And just found the existing bug report about this same error (that I had also commented on previously). Marking this bug as a duplicate of bug #42838. Please follow up on that bug report with any further comments or patches.

I see this for any file format using Gnuplot version 5 on Linux. This seems like a Gnuplot regression to me. Notably, building Octave's doc/interpreter images using Gnuplot 5 produces all black outputs. Switching back to Gnuplot 4.6.6 gives the correct output.

I now remember running into this previously when building the html docs for the signal and communications package and found then the same thing, that going back to Gnuplot 4 restores working figures.

I don't know how to work with the patch mentioned for another bug report. In the meanwhile, I was able to get it working by going back to the gnuplot 4.6 (instead of version 5.0) in my MacPorts installation:

svn co -r 128085 http://svn.macports.org/repository/macports/trunk/dports/math/gnuplot
cd gnuplot/
sudo port install

Plotting and print(...) now seems to work as desired for me.

I see from the PDF file:

<xmp:CreatorTool>gnuplot 5.0 patchlevel 0</xmp:CreatorTool></rdf:Description>

that you used the gnuplot graphics toolkit. I'm working on addressing this along with several other bugs at the moment and will have a patch by the end of the day at this bug report: https://savannah.gnu.org/bugs/?44187 and you can be a tester.

We'll keep this bug report open for now so that others wanting to report the same notice this near the top of the list. But let's put all comments at just https://savannah.gnu.org/bugs/?44187, then close this sometime around 3/8/15.

If I try to print a figure to a graphics file (I have tried PDF and EPS), the resulting graphics is a solid black rectangle. Opening the graphics file in a vector graphics editor program reveals that the rectangle covers the lines originally included in the plot. However, the line color is lost (it's all black and white instead of colored lines).

Here's a code example

> plot (rand(5,1))
> print ('test.pdf')

--> The resulting file (test.pdf) contains the graphics as described above.

(This is on Mac OS X 10.10)
