Using the alpha channel for the colors in the gradient does not seem to work. The changeset
http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/2a992bd19169
provides a possibility to adjust the intensity of the gradient.

Currently the titlebar blends from a color that the user can specify in the settings to white. In comibination with darker desktop themes this looks rather obtrusive and inconsistent. If possible make it blend to "transparent" so that the acutally background color of the widget can shine trough.
