Dear Avinoam (is that your first name?), I really should invite you to the (tiny) team of testers for the io package :-)

As to:
Examples: I dreamt of having a few more, but never bothered. I'll either come up with another, or remove the 's' in io-2.2.8

.xlsx : no, xlswrite can write .xls as well (provided support SW is present). It can even write .wk1, .uof, etc. (see the NEWS for older io versions), depending of support SW

As to the changeset, better put it up on the patch tracker.

Thanks!

Thanks,

just a comment:
Shouldn't it be "example", and "test4.xlsx"?
What about changeing of-io.mk? should I prepare a changeset?

Yesterday I've uploaded io-2.2.7 to the package release tracker.

I think I've fixed the docs now (in mercurial); but I'll leave this report open as I'm busy with streamlining io package messages anyway (some of them are confusing)

Who knows what improvements are possible :-)

I don't think we can reliably write .xlsm or .xlsb. They add additional complexity. Same for reading.

Thanks.

BTW, in xlsopen.m
Shouldn't in be \.xls?, because you want to find
case {".xlsx", ".xlsm", ".xlsb"}

Confirmed.

W/o Excel or Java-based support libs there's only .xlsx, .ods and .gnumeric.

Agreed, one can argue about the documentation and the error messages, but there's simply no .xls I/O support without external dependencies. Unless someone finds a Java/COM/whatever-less substitute that can be implemented in Octave.

I'll fix the docs & messages but that's about all I can do.

Using io package:

xlswrite supports xlsx but not xls.
Note that there a missing newline at the end (any maybe the word
None, if the are no XLS interfaces detected).
