Instead of hiding the cursor changeset
http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/d93293218966
offers the possibility to chose different colors for the title bar of active and not active dock widgets which is in general helpful for a better overview.

IMO only the so called "IBeam"-Cursor (the tiny bar) should be hidden when losing focus, the open/unfilled rectangle is fine.

Is this really a problem? A steady open rectangle is also what I see with gnome terminal, so at least the behavior seems consistent to other command windows that I use.

Same behavior with a block on my Ubuntu system.
Should we hide the other cursors when losing focus?

On my box (Win7, Octave-3.9.0+ 64bit) a (solid) box cursor changes into an open rectangle when focus is out of the command pane.

Thank you for the report.
At least the cursor in the console window should stop blinking when the console loses focus. Does this happen with your build?

If one types something on the command line and then switches to the editor (or everywhere else in the main window) the blinking text cursor of the command line won't hide.
More thoughts: In case you switch to the editor we basically have to cursors. This is confusing because currently the subwindows inside the main window have no focus indicator (like a darker border or something) and thus if you type you can't be sure where the typed text will appear.
I'm using the build from http://mxeoctave.osuv.de/
