No follow up information on this bug report for several months, closing as works for me. If the problem is still occurring or new information can be provided, feel free to comment or open a new bug report.

Octave just sends the commands for plotting down to gnuplot. If the plot window is having trouble the cause is 90% likely to be with gnuplot.

Can you test gnuplot standalone and see if it has the same problem?

After a GNU Plot has been successfully plotted to the monitor, I try to resize it by clicking on the green dot (Mac OSX 10.9.5 Mavericks) to expand it to fill my screen. Then the plot window expands and fills with a grayish purple color and my graph is really tiny. I've attached a screenshot. Hope it helps!
