Many thanks for the looking at this in depth. Your suggestion and patch look good. They have been applied now in git with commit 23b1342

Had a closer look at this issue today and it seems like at least linux ioctl treats <= 0 as max speed.

So the proper solution might be to modify mmc_set_drive_speed to the same behavior.

Attaching patch of suggested fix.

Hi, i'm using cd-paranoia on windows and it seems to set the speed to -1 by default which will output the error message 405: Option not supported by drive.

Attaching a patch with my solution which may not be the correct one, but you see what I mean.
