I think this is an upstream bug. The packager, for example Homebrew or Fink, needs to implement file associations. That isn't something Octave can do. Closing report.

Is this an Octave bug, or an upstream issue with whoever does packaging for MacOS? If it is upstream then I would like to close this bug.

Are there plans to address this in the 4.0.x homebrew-based dmg?

I'll try to make this option available in the 3.8.2 binary release.

I downloaded Octave 3.8.0 from here:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/octave/files/Octave%20MacOSX%20Binary/2013-12-30%20binary%20installer%20of%20Octave%203.8.0%20for%20OSX%2010.9.1%20%28beta%29/

I installed it in the standard way (that is, I didn't compile from source). I don't remember the exact process.

How did you install Octave? Where did you get 3.8.0 from?

A .m file is not registered in OSX to be opened in Octave. When I right-click a file in the Finder app, and choose "Open with", Octave isn't listed in the options.

If I try to change "Other", then Octave is not listed as one of the "recommended applications". If I choose Octave to open it, nothing happens: the file isn't opened.

Naturally, I would expect it to open in the editor.
