OK, so let's say this has been fixed with the 4.0 release and close the bug.

Plotting from the 3.8.2 gui may not be working, but I have no problem with plotting with 4.0.x.

Ben, Sebastian,

I think this bug is no more relevant with the new OSX builds, right?
May I close the ticket?

It's true, I have a gunplot installed via Homebrew. But as brew tells me that is here:

febeling@flomac ~> brew ls gnuplot
/usr/local/Cellar/gnuplot/4.6.6/bin/gnuplot
/usr/local/Cellar/gnuplot/4.6.6/libexec/gnuplot/4.6/gnuplot_x11
/usr/local/Cellar/gnuplot/4.6.6/share/emacs/ (4 files)
/usr/local/Cellar/gnuplot/4.6.6/share/gnuplot/ (35 files)
/usr/local/Cellar/gnuplot/4.6.6/share/man/man1/gnuplot.1

Also I was under the assumption that my PATH config was not in effect as the app bundle should bring its own, if I'm not mistaken.

So I'm not sure how a different gnuplot might end up in this location.

@Florian

you have a different version of gnuplot installed in

which is taking precedence over the one shipping with the app bundle and is possibly incorrectly configured.
maybe you installed that via macports?

that should not happen anyway as the launcher sets:

so the bundle path should be first ...

what is the output of

In version 3.8.2 I get this:

>> system (["which " gnuplot_binary])

/usr/local/octave/3.8.2/bin/gnuplot
ans = 0

>> getenv GNUTERM

ans = qt

This is what I get:

(Keep in mind that this is v. 3.8.0 of the dmg, which I switched to. Not sure if that should be kept in a separate ticket? I initially had the same problem in the 3.8.2 dmg, though.)

@Florian

if you start the up bundle by clicking the icon it is strange that your gnuplot tries to use the aqua terminal. Maybe you have another version of gnuplot in the path?
try the following:

what does it tell you?

@Gregorio

Yes history browsing on the mac GUI did never work before
version 3.8.2, that is known.

the problem is with dmg of version 3.8.2. Plot command works in the dmg of version 3.8.0. But in this version I have found minor problems with some commands: it is not posible to type in the command window ], {, }, @,
and it is not posible to recall previous commands by pressing the up- and down-arrow keys. These problems, in contrast, are solved in version 3.8.2

I'm starting the CLI app bundle and enter the plot test command ('plot(rand(3))') manually as first input.

The gnuplot binary shipping with the 3.8.0 binary supports only the qt terminal, other terminal types are disbled.

The launch script makes sure that qt terminal is selected
before starting Octave so I am (partly) surprised you are seeing that error about aquaterm: indeed aquaterm is neither installed not configured to work, but unless you manually set GNUTERM=aqua it should never be invoked.

Are you starting Octave by clicking on the icon in the Applications folder or starting it manually from a terminal?

I have the same problem with plotting in the 3.8.0 installer CLI, fwiw.

I experimented a bit with different terminal settings for gunplot, as Ben suggested. Here the session output:

https://gist.github.com/febeling/4021707692d82e870a28

The generated gnuplot command doesn't seem to pickup the terminal setting from GNUTERM variable and rather sticks with "aqua".

As per the homebrew installation, that's failing too, right now [1]. The reason is a regression in LLVM [2] which is being tripped up by an unusual construct in the octave source. (Templated std::pow(), if I got them right? Not a C++ programmer here.)

I'm happy to help and give feedback where possible.

As per the GUI: That is plotting, actually, but it doesn't pull back commands from the history via Arrow-Up. I think that one I gonna need to switch to the GUI :)

Thank you for your hard work.

that installer is still in testing phase and was not intended for public use yet, anyways if you want to help improving it your feedback is very welcome.

I'll have a look at the plotting problem if I ca reproduce it and release a new version of the installer soon.

as for the compatibility with homebrew, the binary installer puts everything into

/usr/local/octave/<version number>

so the interference should be minimal, furthermore
if you use homebrew you may want to install Octave
via homebrew directly, this installer is mainly for
those who don't have and don't want a package manager
on their mac.

May not be relevant, but I recall that Homebrew's gnuplot does not support Aquaterm or x11 by default.

The default configuration of Homebrew's gnuplot doesn't support any terminals for displaying the plots. To add support for x11,

I don't know if Homebrew supports qt or not. Perhaps someone can experiment with the octave commands below and report back.

Homebrew definitely doens't provide Aquaterm. But if you are up to a bit of hacking, you'll first need to download and install Aquaterm

http://sourceforge.net/projects/aquaterm/

And then setup the Homebrew build of gnuplot to link to the Aquaterm libs. If you need help with that, please inquire on the Homebew and/or gnuplot help lists.

Beware of multiple installs of Aquaterm and/or gnuplot. You'll avoid a lot of head-aches if you only have one of each installed on your computer.

Plotting doesn't work for me either. I'm using OS X 10.10 with the 3.8.2-1 .dmg.

Is the installer package compatible with Homebrew? Homebrew uses /usr/local by default as installation prefix, too.

Where did you get your Octave 3.8.2 from?
Did you install froma a package manager or compile yourself?
