Would be nice then to have a menu item for the docs as well. That's already catered for in the mxe/MinGW installers.

(I know it's in the GUI but to have to start Octave just to look up something....)

Great, thanks for verifying that it works in KDE when you do a full install :)

I'm sure when 4.0 comes out with the GUI fully supported we will either have two separate launchers or simply make the launcher run the GUI unconditionally.

We'll have to wait for OP to respond to see if something different is going on there.

(Sorry took a while - reinstall of Linux came in between)

@Mike: yes indeed there's a menu entry for the CLI in the application menu - never noted before. But then I do not often do "make install" on Linux, I rather run dev version tru ./run-octave

I see the menu entry is only for the CLI and there is no Octave version info either. That may also have added to my confusion.

Yes, it's there - as the only .desktop file.

There are a lot more .desktop files in /usr/share/.

  • I've copied it to /usr/share - no luck.
  • Edited the properties ("Science"-> "Sciences", "GNU Octave" -> "GNU Octave 3.9.0+" etc) to match & avoid, resp. what's in my App menu - no luck.

I must say that on Mageia (my usual Linux distro) it is often quite hard to recover what settings have gone where. That is not only valid for kde; systemd and other layers have contributed to my confusion. In addition Mageia is heavily if not ridiculously "perl-ized" making it again harder to find & debug issues :-(

It can also be that Mageia-2 is too old. I'll try in Mageia-4 64b later today.

@Philip: do you have a /usr/local/share/applications/www.octave.org-octave.desktop file? That file should be installed when you make install. The name field is "GNU Octave" which is how it shows up for me. I'm not using KDE, but my understanding is that KDE supports standard freedesktop.org paths and configurations.

I just created a foo.desktop test launcher in /usr/local/share/applications and it showed up immediately in my GNOME menu.

How is this supposed to work then?
As I wrote, I did note the application item in Octave's tree.

I've just installed 3.9.0+; afterwards no sign of a new menu entry for Octave-3.9.0+ anywhere in the menu. Loggin off/on made no difference.

My system: Mageia-2 w. KDE.
BTW I installed in /usr/local/ (as root or sudo)

Hmm, this should already be working. How did you install Octave, built and installed yourself or installed from OpenSUSE? Octave installs a freedesktop.org-compatible application launcher, which should show up in any compliant desktop menu system.

There is no GUI desktop launcher yet, because the GUI is still experimental, but with the 4.0 release I expect a GUI-enabled launcher will be installed by default.

At first sight I suppose this is an openSuse issue; it's not Octave's fault that it isn't added to the application menu after installation.

This also holds for when you've built Octave yourself. In that case you'll have to fix this remaining installation detail yourself as well. The Octave project simply cannot cater for App Menu entries for each and every (Linux) distro.

AFAIK there's an Octave launcher file somewhere in Octave's build tree that may be of use.

For in case you don't know, it's easy to add Octave to the KDE menu:
right click on the Application menu button in the panel, then select "Edit applications..." (or something like that) - the rest is very straightforward.

System: openSUSE 13.1 (KDE)

Octave is not in KDE application menu. I can only start it in shell or type the command.

I suggest two menu items: GNU Octave(CLI), GNU Octave(GUI).
