Why does F9 (run highlighted lines of code from the editor) only work for .m files or unnamed (= new & not-yet-saved) files?

ATM I can't test on Linux but this limitation applies on Windows with 3.8.2 and 4.1.0+.

F9 doesn't work from e.g., the collected tests in share/octave/<version>/etc/tests
Saving one of the files with an .m extension makes F9 work automagically.

Matlab (2012a) is agnostic to file extension in this respect.
