I think Octave attempted to follow Matlab's documentation which suggests that the '-depth' argument must appear first.

In any case, does this also apply to -flat in Matlab?

Is this legal?

It seems that in the Octave implementation of findobj, the "-depth" (or "flat") argument has to appear before the list of property param-value pairs, while it can be anywhere in MATLAB.
For example, you can find the following syntax in MATLAB:

Guillaume <gyom>
