Some of them use CONFIGURE_CPPFLAGS, and CONFIGURE_LDFLAGS set in Makefile.in, however some require a number of additional flags to compile and so it isnt consistent.

I looked in a few mk files... lapack.mk and openblas.mk in particular. Yikes! Looks like passing compiler flags is a unique and special pleasure for each package. I guess I'm happy with the defaults after all!

I don't think there is a way of setting additional flags except manually adding to Makefile.in or to specific .mk files in src.

Thanks John. That did the trick (also needed enable-pic-flag).

./configure --enable-native-build --enable-pic-flag host_alias=gnu-linux

Can I ask, how do you choose gcc optimization flags (CFLAGS, CXXFLAGS, FFLAGS)? Is it necessary to go into indivudual .mk files and add/edit them? I really just want to add march=native across the board.

I believe you need to set the system type your are building for if using the native build option, otherwise it defaults to attempting to build for mingw - which wont work as you cant native build mingw on a Linux system.

if you are attempting to cross compile on a Linux box for mingw:
./configure
make

If you are attempting to compile mxe-octave on a Linux box for Linux:
./configure --enable-native-build host_alias=gnu-Linux
make

make[1]: Leaving directory '/home/mark/mxe-octave-d95b8b84cea7'

Looking in tmp-build-pkg-config/pkg-config-0.28.build/config.log there are the following errors:

configure:3344: checking whether the C compiler works
configure:3366: gcc -march=i486 conftest.c >&5
conftest.c:1:0: error: CPU you selected does not support x86-64 instruction set

This leads back to src/build-pkg-config.mk which has this:

# native mingw needs to be told an architechure for the internal glib to build
ifeq ($(MXE_NATIVE_MINGW_BUILD),yes)
$(PKG)_CONFIG_OPTS := CPPFLAGS='-march=i486' LN=$(LN)
endif

If I change i486 to native, then compilation proceeds. However it fails on the next package with this:

I missed the configure line from comment 4.
You cant use the system gcc to cross compile for cross compiling mingw.

Let mxe-octave build the cross compiler.

Did it build build-gcc before attempting to build blas? (The Makefile should do this, unless told not to)

What configure options did you use prior to the running make on mxe-octave?

I made a symbolic link to /usr/bin/gcc (ditto for /usr/bin/ar) and it made progress. Until it broke with this:

It cant download gnutls: (ERROR 404 NOT FOUND)

Since it couldnt download, the checksum then fails.

I updated mxe-octave so the same links as mxe uses and it works for me now:
