S-expressions (popularised by Lisp et al) are a concise notation that is trivial and very fast to parse. Camlhighlight, for instance, defines an S-expression outlang to parse the output of GNU Source-highlight.

I think this S-expression outlang has many potential uses beyond Camlhighlight, and as such, it should be included by default with GNU Source-highlight. Moreover, it has the added advantage of being really tiny:

(Note that the translations section is required for proper escaping of backslashes and double-quotes.)
