As an FYI, Redhat says that future versions of their OS will not have the ipmi kernel module compiled in by default. So the problem should not exist in the (hopefully) near future.

Yes, the kernel module ipmi_devintf was not loaded by default. Couldn't tell it from the error message.

I used init.d script from openipmi to deal with /dev/ipmi0 and loading kernel module.

Thank you for the help.

I just recalled this issue:

http://www.gnu.org/software/freeipmi/freeipmi-faq.html#Why-am-I-seeing-so-many-_0027internal-IPMI-error_0027-or-_0027driver-busy_0027-messages_003f

Does the ipmi kernel driver work? (e.g. start it in most distros with /etc/init.d/ipmi start)

I saw it too. I hope it's not my problem. I can access IPMI on this machine using lan20 protocol with login and password.

A user awhile back

https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/freeipmi-users/2012-09/msg00011.html

had the same problem and later realized his system did not have IPMI.

Not sure if that is the case with your motherboard, or the more likely case is the motherboard is not advertising IPMI properly.

Could you show the output of 'ipmi-locate'. Information about your service processor/ipmi via 'lspci' would be useful too.
