Solutions:

  • Write a parser for `ps` that is platform dependent
  • Look at (grand)*parent to find a known shell. If none found: use $SHELL, fall back to /bin/sh

Problems:

  • There is no common way of determining the shell a process was started from.
  • use Proc::ProcessTable; requires a C-compiler
  • the outout from `ps` is dependent on platform
  • GNU Parallel might not have been started from a shell (but directly from another program)

If the user logs in (using tcsh) and starts his favorite shell (zsh) commands should be run using zsh and not tcsh.

If GNU Parallel is used in a csh script, it should use csh - even if the script was started from bash.
