we added a little text to the texinfo manual about this issue. we can't do anything about the emacs info viewer. gavin has a plan for allowing arbitrary characters in node names, but it needs more discussion and probably won't be in the next release (whenever that may be).
i don't think there's anything more to do here on the texinfo side. feel free to repost if i'm wrong.
thanks,
k

Following Gavin's comment on the EMACS info viewer doing some effort not to preclude colon in node names. It is not really consistent as on the other hand they preclude commas in node names, see files temp3.texi and temp3.info: When you do `M-x Info-validate' on temp3.info, then you get the following message:

The EMACS info viewer is not consistent in the way as it handles the space after `:'. If this is the last entry in the menu like `* Mon entrée:Mon noeud.' in temp1.texi and resulting temp1.info, then the space is not a problem.
Now, if it is NOT the last entry, like `* Mon entrée:Mon noeud.' in temp2.texi and resulting temp2.info, the viewer does not handle the entry properly.
Following the comment by Gavin that the viewer needs a space after `:' in order to allow colons in label names, I fully agree that it is legitimate to desire the possibility to have a colon in a menu entry name or node name, especially if you document some SW where colon as some syntaxic meaning (like in C++, or even in emacs-lisp for constant symbols). However the viewer trick does not look as a good idea.
It would be better if there was some colon escape command in Texinfo, like @comma{}, @{, @} and @@ for other special characters, and that this colon escape would be used in place of colon when it is part of the node/label name. Maybe a @string command would be more concise for escaping `,' and `:', i.e. you would write `@string{Hello, world: I'm happy.}' instead of `Hello@comma{} world@colon{} I'm happy@period{}', assuming that @colon{} and @period{} are the two new commands for inserting a colon and period respectively in menu entries.
Vincent.
PS: see info nodes `(texinfo) Inserting a Comma', `(texinfo) Inserting a Backslash', `(texinfo) Inserting a Hashsign', if you are not convinced that what I am suggesting is already the rule for other characters with a special meaning in some special context.

Sorry, in the previous message I did a plain cut and paste for showing what the EMACS viewer shows. However it is not what I see, because the cut and paste also takes invisible text.
So I made two screen captures, in attached file temp_info_ok.png and attached file temp_info_not_ok.png
(file #31815, file #31816)

I attached some exemple temp.texi, and the corresponding output temp.info.
The problem in temp.texi is at line 58:
There is a missing space between `:' and `About' which is not conformant to texinfo manual.
However texi2any does not bark at it, and make some info output that the emacs viewer does not handle correctly. Here is what I see with the viewer:
If I type `1', I will go to node `Mon noeud', so node `About this document' is ignored. With a space between `:' and `About', here is what I would see:
and the EMACS viewer allows to go to both nodes.
Here is my EMACS version --- in case the viewer is to blame:
