presumably the reference to line 6 is related to that being where the @documentencoding was specified. i didn't look beyond that, though.

what i wonder is, why is Perl talking about "map to Unicode" anyway? If the error is that 0xE9 is not part of US-ASCII, well, ok, but where did we tell Perl that "Unicode" was involved?

This message is output by perl and not by texi2any. I have no idea on how to catch the message and have a message more in line with other texi2any messages.

I don't really understand why perl considers that the line is line 6 and not the correct one.

I am closing this since I think we can't fix it, reopen if you think it is not correct.

It attached an exemple (it is not really minimal, but you will easily see what happens).

I am a dumb user, and I set:

in the document header (line 6), but at the same time I do

with `é' at line 59. texi2any then makes this error message:

which is not really easy for the dumb user to find that his/her error is related to line 59 and due to his/her non observance of the encoding declaration of line 6 --- well does the `line 6' in error message relate to line 6 of temp.texi ?

So, this is not really a bug, but a suggestion for improvement.
