The problem with this is that there's no clearly defined syntax for mathematical formulas in plain text. One could support the basic arithmetic operations, equality, etc. but that would be about it.

This means that either we implement inconsistent behaviour (sometimes paste works sometimes not) or we don't at all, and the second choice is the one which was taken long ago.

If you consider it it's the only logical one. You need some syntax, be it TeXmacs or LaTeX or whatever. And once you write using this syntax you have to tell TeXmacs that you are using it. That's what the menu "Paste from..." is there for.

So in general the error makes sense.

This is a "won't fix", sorry!

When I type mathematical formulas such as "x=0" outside a mathematical environment I want to move it to a mathematical environment.

A possibility is to select the text and hit the button "insert maths \xi_n^2".

But the first thing I tried is to cut and paste the mathematical text in an already created formula. This would produce an error message and no paste.

I think that it would be quite nice to allow to paste text into maths environment.

Here is a precise list showing the behaviour I am talking about:
Create a new empty document
Type "x=0", then "$" (create a new formula)
Hit the left arrow key (exit the formula)
Select "x=0"
Cut with control+x
Hit the right arrow key (go back to the formula)
Paste with control+v
The text is not pasted and the following error message appears in the status bar:
"Error : invalid paste of text into a formula"
