Thanks for your bug report. This is a long-standing known issue with OpenGL plotting, closing as a duplicate of but #33180.

If you need a workaround to print non-visible plots, use the gnuplot toolkit instead:

This must be run before opening any figures. Add it to your startup files if you want to make this change permanent for you.

When you try to print a plot in figure that has the property 'visible' to 'off', octave does nothing.

trycode:
---------------------------------------------------
figure(1);
plot([1 2],[1 2]);
print test1.png -dpng #prints to file correctly

figure(2,'visible','off');
plot([1 2],[2 1]);
print test2.png -dpng #nothing happens
---------------------------------------------------
