Thanks for your bug report. Fortunately, this has already been fixed in the current stable version of Octave 3.8.1.

For the function wavread, in the documentation the format for the "Read only samples n1 through n2 from each channel." variation is not properly stated:

Currently:
[...] = wavread (filename, n1 n2)

Should be:
[...] = wavread (filename, [n1 n2])

Only by finding examples under Matlab was I able to work this out ...
