This bug report and bug #43332 sound very similar. Still unable to reproduce here. No response from the OP in several months, closing inactive report. Feel free to comment again or open a new bug report if this behavior still occurs and more information can be provided.

I'm not at all sure what could be causing this. Since it's one computer of yours and not another, could it be based on configuration? Can you try running Octave on the offending system either under a brand new user account or with an empty home directory and configuration, something like:

Does that change anything?

I just removed Octave and then installed it from Debian backports. Same behavior.

When running without the GUI, everything is fine. This is strange because I have another computer running Debian Wheezy and the same version of Octave and this problem does not occur on that machine.

Unable to reproduce here.

Since you're using Debian 7, can you try installing Octave 3.8.1 from the backports repository? I just installed it here on a Debian 7 system and I don't see this problem. This would be useful to know if it's due to something about your particular build environment.

Do you see the same behavior if you run Octave without the GUI, all other things staying the same?

When running in the GUI, whenever I plot data (using "plot" or "stem" for example), it appears as though control is not returned to the terminal (like the plot function never returns). However, this is a bit of an illusion - it is more like the terminal stops getting updated. If I double-click on something in my history, it will run that command again - you can see the history get updated with the new command. However, it does not show up in the terminal.

You can also type a command and hit enter and see the history get updated with the new command - it just does not show up in the terminal. The problem persists even if the plot window is closed.

I built Octave 3.8.1 from source. The only complaint I got at build time was that I would not be able to call Java methods.

I am running Debian Wheezy (fresh install basically - less than a day old) on a very old computer (CPU = AMD Turion 64 X2).

I am attaching a screenshot showing this situation.
