That behavior is expected and documented [1] and
must be maintained for compatibility with Matlab.

In version 3.8.1, with all the packages I could find installed.
I have only seen this when defining a variable called tf, and I'm not sure if this happens with the rest of the function names.
If a variable called tf has been defined, then the tf function (Transfer Function from the control package) won't work.
Clearing that variable will return everything to normal.
