Some character variants have been standardized.

They are to be accessed by encoding variation Selectior 1 (U+FE00) before another character.

Some of these are very delicate differences (e.g. serifs on union-intersection), while some differences are often seen (e.g. less-than or equals with slanted equals). Some of them ... I cant't tell what the difference is about.

It looks like a few dozen math symbols could be alternately displayed this way.

(I wonder if it makes sense also to provide a lookup table variation selector as well.)

Not sure I know what's meant by the emoji vs. text distinction -- mostly their examples look similar, just taken from different fonts -- often the diffrence is that the emoji one is in color.
