Upon further testing my issue seems to be only related to the Helvetica font, unrelated to Bibtex. It also happens with umlauts in the main text.

I still have this issue when using the TeXmacs Helvetica font and when exporting to PDF. Umlauts do not show up in the bibliography in the PDF, but do in the TeXmacs GUI.

Argh ... charset issues (especially when they are due to knuth's choice to use a /slightly non compatible to ascii/ charset) gives me headhaches. :-/
I guess it is ok now.
