The patch no longer applied so I had to clean it up a lot. I checked it in here (https://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/650e5d50cd47). Thanks Pantxo. Sorry it took nearly 4 years to apply.

This issue is still present in Octave 4.2.0.

There is a PATCH supplied in comment #1.

In case translation is to be done in octave, I have attached a patch proposal for eis-base.cc.

I used man pages from [1-6] to parse function specific error number correspondence.

The arpack error string is appended a request for bug report ("This should not happen. Please, see http://www.gnu.org/software/octave/bugs.html, and file a bug report") when it's unambiguously a bug in octave interface to arpack (i.e. any error number but -9, -14 and -9999 which refer to Lapack or convergence errors).

As discussed in bug #41305, error messages like this from the eigs function:

are not very helpful. ARPACK has enumerated what its error codes mean, so it could be left to Octave to translate them into useful strings, or we could request that ARPACK provide a strerror-like functionality.
