There was no method to "undo" autoload before. Versions before the inclusion of "remove" will keep the function until the end of the Octave session.

which works in 3.8 and 3.6, have not tried in 3.4 yet.
It is a bit ugly, but hey it can be removed in a distant future:-)
What was the method to remove functions in 3.6?
Is there anything bad with doing it like this?

Yes. pkg() will create PKG_ADD and PKG_DEL scripts from such comments in the source.
The problem is that such change would bump the next release dependencies by a lot.

there should be complemented with // PKG_DEL as well?

The sockets package defines a bunch of functions from its single oct file. The problem is that once the package is unloaded, they stay around.
This can be fixed by adding PKG_DEL instructions to unload them with
The problem is that this feature was only added to a recent version (not sure if 3.8 or 3.6).
