Yes, "Set Directory" landed in the gui-release branch (needs new translation) and the icons where updated in the stable branch.

Hi. Just wondering if this suggested icon swap took place:

In the File Browser, rename "Search diretory" to "Set directory" and replace its icon, from a magnifying glass to a folder icon.
then use the magnifying glass for the Find Files.

Thanks.

Thanks, Rik.
The other changes of ellipses landed in the stable branch but since I have overwritten some translation updates while adding the ellipses changes to all translation files the gui-branch is the better choice.

I added the ellipses on the gui-release branch (http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/5936afdc75e1).

This part:
<http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/file/cae24b7cfaf4/libgui/src/welcome-wizard.cc#l60>

would benefit from comment to translators, like this:

Please translate "Next" consistently with that adopted by Qt for its system buttons, as per files qt_XX.ts available at <https://qt.gitorious.org/qt/qt/source/f7b3072924fb57b3979ff4d536eb213270be1047:translations>

as per <https://savannah.gnu.org/bugs/?41328#comment2>,
a few translation updates were inadvertently overwritten;
the files attached restore the lost ones, plus a few disambiguations for ellipsis/non-ellipsis cases.

ts files are definitely not diff friendly in general;
I've manually changed the latest stable version.

a few more strings need ellipsis, in the file manager right-click context menu: "New File", "New Directory", "Rename", "Delete", as they all open up a dialog window.

Also, "Find Files ..." shouldn't have a space before the ellipsis.

"catalog"? Really?

I think we should go retro and consistently use the term "catalog" instead.

Text improvements added with cset

Closing this report. Should we open a report for changing "directory" to "folder"?

Rik,

As I expected. It was good that you thought about it
for a minute or two and checked on obvious issues.

Maybe someday...

one more change: "debug" to "run or debug" in both of these (octave-qt-link.cc):

? tr ("The file %1 does not exist in the load path. To debug the function you are editing, you must either change to the directory %2 or add that directory to the load path.").arg (qfile).arg (qdir)
: tr ("The file %1 is shadowed by a file with the same name in the load path. To debug the function you are editing, change to the directory %2.").arg (qfile).arg (qdir));

It might be a while before we change "directory" to "folder", if ever. We have lots of instances such as the command 'pwd' for "present working directory" which are documented with directory rather than folder. A quick grep through the .texi files has 225 instances of the word directory which should be changedf over at the same time.

This may not be too helpful right here, but someday
it will likely be appropriate to move with the times
and do a general change of: directories -> folders

I have pushed changeset
http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/cae24b7cfaf4 (stable)
with minor text changes and related updates of the language files.

Remaining issues are:

  • emacs > emacs +%l %f
  • &New File > &New Script
  • Enter the filename expression > Enter the filename search expression
  • Named: > Filename:
  • Start in: > Start directory:
  • Recurse directories > Search in sub-directories
  • Include directories > Include directory names
  • Search must match text > Enter the file content search expression
  • View the variables in the active workspace. > View the variables in the workspace.
  • storage class > category
  • rename "Script" [in the toolbar, not in the menu] to "New Script"
  • In the File Browser, rename "Search diretory" to "Set directory" (that's what it actually does) and chose new icon

I agree with the approach. Adding "..." to the end of some menu entries is small enough that it won't require re-translation and it is also small enough not to cause a problem on the stable branch.

I suggest that text changes without need of the translators go into the stable branch, changes that need action by the translators go into the gui-release branch.

As soon as the recent changes of the language files in the stable branch (cset http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/0b5f669f5b03) are merged into the gui-release branch, the text improvements are added.

Fri 10 Jan 2014 09:02:28 PM UTC, original submission:

Some uncontroversial modifications for the original texts in English -- hopefully the translations can be modified accordingly without having to call the translators:
(these were based on what OpenOffice adopts)
Save File &As > Save File &As...
Print > Print...
Save Workspace As > Save Workspace As...
is already open in the editor > is already open in the editor.
Find Files ... > Find Files...
Load Workspace > Load Workspace...
Goto line > Goto line... [or Go to line...]
&More > &More...
Show octave directory > Show Octave directory
Set octave directory > Set Octave directory
Goto current octave directory > Go to current Octave directory
is a placeholder for the default background color) > is a placeholder for the default background color).
ways to get help including > ways to get help, including

Some possibly controversial modifications:
emacs > emacs +%l %f
&New File > &New Script
Enter the filename expression > Enter the filename search expression
Named: > Filename:
Start in: > Start directory:
Recurse directories > Search in sub-directories
Include directories > Include directory names
Search must match text > Enter the file content search expression
View the variables in the active workspace. > View the variables in the workspace.
storage class > category
The associated file editor tab has disappeared. It was likely closed by some means. > The associated file editor tab has disappeared.
The configuration file is stored in %1. If that file exists, you will not see this dialog when Octave starts. > The configuration file is stored in %1.

rename "Script" [in the toolbar, not in the menu] to "New Script"

In the File Browser, rename "Search diretory" to "Set directory" (that's what it actually does)
also replace its icon, from a magnifying glass to a folder icon.
then use the magnifying glass for the Find Files
