Fixed with changeset
http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/5f7f58866922
in the gui-release branch.

Thanks for the bug report.

On openSUSE 13.1.
Steps to reproduce:
1. Open version 3.8 in GUI mode
2. load a .m file into the editor
3. attempt to replace a string such as "pause" with "%pause"
4. leave the "wrap while searching" check box checked (default)
4. use the "Replace all" button

All 4 of my CPUs immediately go to about 40% used and stay there.
Attempt to force quit the GUI, this may be difficult since all CPUs are busy and may not be in a mood to accept interrupts.

Repeat the process with the "wrap while searching" deactivated and the process works fine.
