Since there are no more comments, I assume the bug is fixed. Closing report.

This bug should have been fixed with changeset
http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/4e49bc41f899
Can someone confirm this?

This works for me, but I use KDE as the window manager which is very friendly with Qt applications.

  • No, with other QT applications this does NOT happen. Especially it does not happen with the "qtoctave" application, installed directly from the official ubuntu 12.04 repository (precise/universe).
  • Yes, normally I DO use the global menu. But I think this behavior is independent of the global menu (a part of unity) because it also happens in the same way when I use the Gnome desktop (called "Gnome Classic" at the Ubuntu locking screen) which does not have any global menu functionality at all.

Does this also happen with other qt-applications?
Are you using the global menu bar?

Thank you for telling me the workaround with Alt-Tab, this works fine.

To your first question:

After clicking back into the octave gui windows the focus will stay at the window which had the focus before, and will not return to the octave gui window. (The focus position is consistently observable via the color of the title bar, as well as with where typed text will go into.)

New information: This acctually "works" with ANY other window, not just octave figure windows. So a shorter way to reproduce this behavior is:

  • start the octave gui
  • click onto any other window (e.g. a text editor window)
  • click back into the octave gui window
  • result: the window focus will stay at the other window. If you type some text for example, it will go into the other window (e.g. text editor window)

To your second question:

If I close the figure window, the focus will jump to a different window. I have (in only a few tries) never observed that the focus jumped back to the octave gui window, but I cannot tell you for sure that this will never happen.

Where is the focus after you have clicked into the terminal window? Still in the figure window? Is the title bar of the octave main window showing that the window is the activate one?
Where is the focus when you close the figure window?

(Note: Partial duplicate of Bug #40792. New information provided in this bug report is that GUI behavior is not restricted to Unity but happens with Gnome as well.)

Quick work-around I use on Ubuntu 12.04: use alt-tab after you close the figure window. That will return focus to the command window. You shouldn't need to click.

I use Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. The behavior happens with the Unity desktop as well as with the Gnome desktop.

This behavior happend with the current octave-3.8.0-rc2. I downloaded it and compiled it with no changes in the presets.

I have not made any changes to the Gui options.

Here is how to reproduce the behavior:

  • Start the gui with "octave-3.8.0-rc2 --force-gui"
  • Type "figure" into the terminal and press enter.
  • A figure window will open and the window focus switches

to this new figure windos. That's allright.

  • Now click back into the terminal part of the octave GUI.
  • type some letters --> The letters will NOT appear in the

terminal, because the window focus has not switched back :(

This behavior happens as well with the editor part of the GUI instead of the terminal part.

The only way I found the "reconquer" the focus, is to click onto the "editor" tab and than on the "terminal" tab of the gui. Then the focus will eventually jump back to the terminal.

This is a very annoying behavior, because it keeps me from effectivly using the gui. After each command which generates a plot (most of my scripts will do this!) I need several clicks to be able to continue my work in the editor or command window.
