There were two race conditions in the build system for the cruft directory. I checked in a fix here (http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/a99bbbcf743c).

When configuring and building octave into an empty, new directory, a simple 'make' seems to work, but 'make -j -l2' fails with

I guess that someone expects that liboctave/cruft/ranlib exists although it does not (yet). When I create that directory before building everything is fine even with 'make -j -l2' .
