Okay, this is a good point. I will fix this.

To catch such unintended overwriting there's already the
"File exists - Replace? Yes No"
pop-up.

Now, what would you expect Octave to do if you click "Yes" in that pop-up?

(I would expect Octave to obey the explicit, user-confirmed intention to overwrite the file, rather than an error message. But OK that's just me :-) )

I don't think the behavior is inconsistent. If the user wants to "save as" an edited file into the same file then there is a real chance that this is done by accident. If you really want to save into exactly the same file you would use "save". Saving into a different file that has the same name but is in another directory is okay because you do not risk to overwrite the original file by accident.

So it is really meant to be a feature.

The "Save as" option in the GUI editor's file menu refuses to overwrite the current file (the file currently being edited). After the "..... Replace it? Yes No" dialog, upon clicking "Yes" it shows an error message that the chosen file name is identical to an existing file name.

Remarkably, it DOES allow to overwrite a file in another subdir with the same name, but only the first time. So this behavior is a bit inconsistent.

Of course "Save" works as well (and -arguably- may be preferred), but IMO "Save as" to the current file should just work. All other programs I know allow this (OK, weak argument, but true AFAIK).
