Probably should add a tiny section near the '!' documentation, perhaps a footnote, that says that in Matlab this operator is used for shell commands and that the same result can be had with the system() command.

I see no way to make !shellcommand work without giving up ! as the logical not operator. It's unacceptable to me to introduce inconsistencies like "! is logical not except if it appears at the beginning of a statement".

Do people really use !shellcommand frequently?

In any case, I think the best we can do is document this in the manual and FAQ and close this bug report as "won't fix".

Yes, we don't follow Matlab here because we use '!' as the logical not operator.

Just to document a difference in octave vs matlab.

In matlab you can run a shell/os command using the ! command.
would run the systems date command and display the date.
