btw, can we rename this bug to "octave should dump command window contents into log file upon crash", or should a separate bug be filed?

if you wish to investigate this, you can issue the command:

diary mydiary

then normally log file mydiary will include a farewell message just before it dies.

After a Windows update, the problem is no longer there.
So forget it I guess.

re bug 40643-
Octave is doing nothing when it crashes, with me working in another window.
I downloaded Octave as "octave-3.6.2-vs2010-setup.exe" from "Sourceforge.net/projects/octave". For libraries I would have just accepted the default choice.

Octave only accesses the Internet if you ask it to (using the urlread or ftp functions, or the homework submission script written for the machine learning class).

Can you describe what Octave is doing when it crashes? Is it idle or is it running a calculation? Do you know the specific function that was called when it crashed if it was running a script?

I'm no Octave-on-Windows expert, but it also helps to say which build of Octave you installed, MinGW or MSVC. Also which Octave Forge packages you are using and which version of the BLAS libraries you are using if you had a choice when you installed, Netlib (reference) BLAS, ATLAS, or OpenBLAS.

I have been using Octave as part of a machine learning on-line course. The Octave window sometimes disappears without warning and Octave is no longer running. This makes the course difficult.
Version 3.6.4 has the same problem. This is on Windows 7 64 bit.

My computer is also running two BOINC programs (Einstein at Hone and Quake Tracker). Both these, but especially the latter, frequently send data over the Internet.

When I suspend these programs, the problem with Octave is gone.

Does Octave access the Internet as well, and crashes if the link is busy?
