I added a note to the documentation strings for ls() and dir() which describes their use of wildcard characters. I think that is about all that we can do for this.

Suppose you have a file named "a[1]"

It's been treated as wildcards match, but `help dir` doesn't mention that explicitly.

Matlab will return the information about the file "a[1]".

In octave, I have to do something like

Seems hard to fix... but at least document it will have a great help.
