The second patch fixes all the issues I described, i.e. using current directory browser or double click in file browser.

No, the first is then obsolete. I just wasn't aware of the function setCodecForCStrings before.

I like the idea of changing the coding in one spot. If we use the second patch, is the first still needed?

Trying to use "current directory" browser (magnifying glass button), and choosing a folder with french accents (here Téléchargements) results in an error :

If I manually write the path in the command window it works :
- "pwd" returns well scripted path
- in the top "Current directory" label I see weird characters in place of accentuated ones

The same same error is observed using the File browser windows if I double click on a Folder with accents. Interestingly, here the main label and the folders are well scripted.
