I fixed this on the development branch of Octave in this changeset (http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/4c7ee36f591d). You can probably patch your current sources with that changeset, or you can build from Mercurial sources or wait until the next major release of Octave (3.8.0) to see the change.

I do not know how Matlab reacts and if this is a matter of the plotting toolkit, but it would be nice if Octave could plot negative loglogerr plots, as it can handle loglog plots.
