I pushed a fix for bar.m

http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/53d6166f7867

Changing the ydata for an area() plot is working for me, so I'm closing this.

bar() and area() also need to be modified

I've pushed a chagneset

http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/92811d110839

The stairs() function also needs an equivalent fix. There may be other plot functions as well.

opps, another error. My inference regarding "PostSet" is likely wrong. The code below runs in Matlabl without eror.

and returns

From this I infer that the fix should be made in _stem_.m::update_data()

Bad guess!

The sequence of events is;

(1) The listener for xdata is being triggered when it is set, and before before ydata is set.
(2) An error is triggered because xdata and ydata have different sizes.
(3) When the set() command is called the second time, xdata doesn't change, so the listener isn't updated until the ydata is changed. At which point xdata and ydata are consistent and the stem plot updates accordingly.

I think the proper solution is to wait until the set() command completes before triggering a listener (i.e. listener runs "PostSet" in Mathworks lingo).

The "catch" code is not triggered in Matlab.

I haven't looked yet, but my guess is that the xdata listener for the hggroup isn't working properly.
