I do not know. Perhaps the reason is to have the "Functions Reference" chapter starting right way with the menu of functions, in order to improve the navigability, otherwise the user would have to scroll down until she gets to the menu.

Ah! I see what's happening now. The generated texi is removing the "Functions by category" section when generating the Info file. Do you know why it's doing that at all?

I think that the logic behind the original code in mktexi was to remove the "Functions Alphabetically" section title in the info form of the documentation, since it was the only section in the "Function Reference" chapter, what is somehow redundant information. I think that this was a sensible design and
it worked with texinfo << 5.0. However, it seems that having a @subsection following immediately a @chapter is not allowed in texinfo 5.1.

At least when building the PDF, the section "Functions Alphabetically" does exist under the section "Function Reference" (Debian Wheezy with texinfo 4.13). So I'm guessing you fixed not only a compatibility with new texinfo versions, but also a bug on the documentation.

Patch applied on SVN with r11944.

I used to be able to build the comm package from source, but I am having now the following error message:

I suspect that this happens now because I upgraded texinfo to version 5.1 in my system.

I tracked down the problem and could fix it by patching the doc/mktexi file. I guess that the comm package gets this file from the admin/ directory, so I am attaching to this bug report a patch to admin/mktexi. The only drawback of this patch is that section title "Functions Alphabetically" will appear in the chapter "Function Reference" of the info documentation, which did not exist before.
