I took a look. The problem is clearly the missing final bracket. Octave believes it is still in the middle of defining a matrix when it encounters the END-OF-FILE marker.

The parser has undergone a lot of work on the development branch and the problem has been fixed there. Unfortunately the changes are so large that they can't easily be backported to the stable branch.

So, we won't fix this bug on stable, but it will be fixed by the next major release of Octave (3.8.0 or 4.0.0).

Something went wrong with your upload. Can you try to attach the file again to this bug report so that we can look at it?

With octave 3.6.4 on ubuntu 12.04 I ran the following attached test file and I got:

octave:1> test
error: invalid character '' (ASCII 255) near line 4, column 1
parse error near line 4 of file /net/gaia/home/levente/source/octave/dataCleaning/test.m

where test.m contained the following 3 lines:
"dt = [[ 1;2; 0];

"
