Here are some further tests. My octave (without zlib compiled) loads '-v4' and '-v6' version saved Matlab mat data files, the rest fails.

GNU Octave, version 3.6.4
octave:1> load thermometer
error: load: invalid element type = 15
error: load: trouble reading binary file 'thermometer'

octave:1> load thermometer_v4

octave:2> load thermometer_v6

octave:3> load thermometer_v7
error: load: invalid element type = 15
error: load: trouble reading binary file 'thermometer_v7'

octave:3> load thermometer_v73
Warning! **HDF5 library version mismatched error**

I don't know. I don't use Matlab.

I have added a better diagnostic for this problem, which closes this bug report:

Thanks Jordi. Is there a way to save uncompressed mat files within Matlab? Right now, it is easier for me to go through this way than installing a new ZLIB and re-compiling Octave.

Yes, without zlib, you won't be able to read mat files with compressed fields (which is virtually all mat files). You can probably write them, though.

Could this be due to compiling the Octave without ZLIB libraries enabled.
(i.e. ./configure --without-z)

I can't reproduce this on 3.6.4 either.

works in the dev version - I'll try to find the difference

There is a mat file (saved from within Matlab R2012b) loading issue with the newest version of Octave:

GNU Octave, version 3.6.4
octave:1> load thermo
error: load: invalid element type = 15
error: load: trouble reading binary file 'thermo'

However, this works fine in an older version:

GNU Octave, version 3.4.3
octave:1> load thermo.mat
octave:2> whos
Variables in the current scope:

Attr Name Size Bytes Class
==== ==== ==== ===== =====
Temp1 15x1 120 double
Temp2 15x1 120 double
Temp3 15x1 120 double
ans 1x39 363 cell

Total is 84 elements using 723 bytes

Attached is the test file.
