I did
Marco, try pulling and updating to the latest revision in the Mercurial archives. You may need to run the bootstrap script again. I'm not sure that the changes to the source files in gnulib-hg will be noticed and libgnu rebuilt.
Post back if everything is working and I will close this report.

Update the Octave gnulib-hg subrepo by pulling from hg.octave.org and update to the corresponding revision.

Jordi,
What is the procedure for grabbing the latest updates into gnulib-hg? This bug has been fixed upstream and if we just grab the latest gnulib code we can close this bug report.

Simply delegate to the system <sys/select.h> in this case too.

Thanks for checking in to this. I don't think this is Octave's fault. We use gnulib for the gettimeofday function and the changeset you identified is one in which we synced our gnulib repository to the latest gnulib repository. This brought in their changes which may not have been perfect.
I think you will need to take up the question with the gnulib folks. They have been pretty responsive, in particular Paul Eggert has shown up on the Octave Maintainers list in regard to other problems we were having.
If I had to guess, this changeset looks suspicious (http://git.savannah.gnu.org/gitweb/?p=gnulib.git;a=commit;h=db61fd22822da6974c2ca4caa2975d74229a4c70).
See http://www.gnu.org/software/gnulib/ for where and how to report a bug to them.

This might be tedious, but could you use 'hg bisect' to determine which changeset introduced the problem? We have recently updated the gnulib repository twice. It is possible that they have a bug which we have imported.
I'm thinking two critical revisions to check are:
