GNU Parallel spawns one process per input line, so the output is correct.

--jobs controls how many greetings.py are run AT THE SAME TIME, not how many are run in total.

You are probably looking for something else. Describe your problem on parallel@gnu.org. Then others might be able to help you.

Outputs 6 greetings instead of the required amount of up to 3. File sample.txt contains 6 lines of data. File greetings.py prints the word Greetings! to stdout. GNU parallel 20130222.

cat sample.txt | parallel --jobs 3 ./greetings.py

Output:

Greetings!
Greetings!
Greetings!
Greetings!
Greetings!
Greetings!
