There was a problem with the regular expression code which I fixed here (http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/1e9a6285acc4). Java was a red herring which merely provoked the bug due to differences in how code was loaded into memory.

Steps to reproduce:

1) Start a brand new instance of Octave from the command line
2) Execute the following:

On a recent development tip, 49f5962fa20d, the code in question causes a segfault. This is not the case with the stable release 3.6.3 so this is a regression.
