Version 3.2.4 is quite old. I would try upgrading to 3.6.3 before doing much of anything else.

Incidentally, I tried but can't reproduce your results with 3.2.4. This was on a Linux system (Kubuntu 10.04).

I appreciate what GNU Octave has done. I use it in my numerical analysis class all the time. Thanks!
