Many newer Supermicro systems have a firmware bug in which the checksum of response packets in calculated incorrectly.

When FreeIPMI software sees a packet with invalid checksums, it tosses the packet assuming it is corrupted.

Newer, although possibly not yet published on Supermicro's website, firmwares are confirmed to fix this. In the meantime, the newest FreeIPMI supports a "nochecksumcheck" workaround to get around the problem.

I cannot speak for IPMIView, but ipmitool does not check the checksum of response packets, which is why it happens to work.

Please see this thread in the FreeIPMI mailing list for more details:

and this post

http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/freeipmi-users/2012-11/msg00000.html

which according to the user, the fix is in the 1.85 firmware release.

Receiving BMC Timeout when attempting to connect to SuperMicro SYS-F627R3-R72B+ and SYS-6017R-TDF systems with the latest Supermicro IPMI firmware. Able to connect to these systems with other tools (IPMI View, ipmitool) without any issue.
